The inaugural flight KC171 will depart from Almaty on November 30, 2026, with the first return flight KC172 scheduled to leave Tokyo on December 1, 2026. Flights from Almaty will operate on Mondays and Thursdays, departing at 21:55 and arriving in Narita at 09:25 the following day. Return flights from Tokyo are scheduled for Tuesdays and Fridays, departing at 10:55 and arriving in Almaty at 16:20. The westbound flight duration is 7 hours and 30 minutes, while the eastbound return takes 9 hours and 25 minutes.
The route will be operated by the Airbus A321LR aircraft, featuring both Business and Economy class cabins. Round-trip economy fares start from KZT 350,552, while business-class return tickets start from KZT 1,398,918. All fares include applicable taxes and surcharges, reports Zakon.kz. The schedule remains subject to final regulatory government approval.
The flights will be operated under a codeshare agreement with Japan Airlines, originally signed by the carriers in August 2024. At the time,Japan Airlines announcedthat the Almaty–Tokyo route would debut in the spring of 2026.
The launch date has been postponed several times. In August 2024, Air Astana CEO Peter Foster announced a postponement to March 2026, citing ongoing issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, according to the Japan Aviation Hub. In March 2026, Air Astana deferred the launch further without specifying a new date. The airline's press service attributed this to complexities surrounding Japanese visa acquisition for Kazakhstani citizens, reported Vlast.
Kazakhstani nationals require a visa to travel to Japan. The Embassy of Japan in Kazakhstanaccepts applications exclusively in person, with no electronic visa option currently available. Processing takes a minimum of five working days, though consular fees for citizens of Kazakhstan are waived. Meanwhile, Japanese citizens enjoy visa-free entry to Kazakhstan for stays of up to 30 days, reports Forbes Kazakhstan.
Market Implications
- For Travel Agents: Clients will now be able to fly nonstop from Almaty to Tokyo. However, Japanese visas must still be applied for in person at the embassy, a factor that must be factored into trip planning timelines.
- For Tour Operators: With a twice-weekly frequency, Japan itineraries from Almaty must align with the operational days: departures on Monday or Thursday, and returns on Tuesday or Friday.
- For Hoteliers, Guides, and DMCs in Kazakhstan: The new direct route opens up seamless access for Japanese leisure and business travelers arriving in Almaty.
- For All Industry Stakeholders: The flight schedule is still pending final regulatory approval. Sales and bookings for these flights should be managed with appropriate client advisories regarding this pending status.
